With so much history, York is a great place to spend a few days exploring. The Walls, Minster and medieval streets are all fascinating, and there are plenty of museums, and walks to keep even the most enthusiastic historian busy.
York Minster The largest Gothic cathedral north of the Alps. A roman legionary headquarters stood on the site before the first wooden church was founded in AD627. The present magnificent structure was completed in 1472 after an staggering 250 years in the building. Major restoration work was carried out after two fires in the 19th century, a more recent fire in 1984 caused severe damage to the south transept roof, the restored building was rededicated by the queen in 1988.
York Castle Museum Originally this museum sprang from the collection of Dr John Kirk, a rural doctor in North Yorkshire. The collection consisted of every day things that were slowly disappearing as lifestyles changed. A fascinating look at life in the 19th century
Cliffords Tower This huge mound opposite castle Gate was hurriedly constructed by William the conqueror two years after the Battle of Hastings to keep the north country under control. However the first wooden structure was burnt down within a year. Another wooden keep was again destroyed in 1190, during anti Jewish riots when some 150 Jews lost their lives. There is a plaque in there memory at the bottom of the tower. The stone tower was completed in 1270 and stood until 1684 when a fire set off the powder magazine and blew off the roof, leaving the structure as it is today.Jorvick Center 01904 643 211 "Time cars" take visitors back a thousand years to a reconstructed Viking settlement. Officially opened in 1984, this has been a hugely successful addition to Yorks museums
National Railway Museum 01904 621 261 The largest Railway Museum in the world. The size of the place is impressive. With a huge array of rolling stock and locomotives. A giant turntable is regularly in use and the locomotives can be climbed on and looked at at close quarters.
The Shambles probably Yorks most famous street one of the best preserved medieval streets in the whole of europe. Originally called Fleshammels (the street of butchers) the broad windowsills are a legacy of these times when they would have been used to display the meat.
